I say retro is ALWAYS a good choice, and cowboy boots always add character, and because a writer is technically an artist, you can wear whatever you damn well please---including daytime sequins.
And personally, I LOVE daytime sequins.
I wish more people would be more adventurous with their daily clothing. We all look like drones from the Gap.
I'm voting with Susan here. Artist. Writer. Eccentricities. Use it for all its worth. I only hope to someday be sitting in a bookstore for a reading and damn if I won't don something sequined!

Depending on your book and the audience, I guess it would depend on whether or not you wanted to be taken seriously. LOL

It all depends on your attitude. If you trend towards the Mimi Bobeck end of the attitude spectrum, then you could absolutely pull it off.
But if you're the meek, retiring type, then such an outfit could kill you.

I'm giving it two thumbs up as well.
Oh yes! I can even envision it, which is pretty scary.
And why the hell not?
You could wear it even if you were simply a dishwasher!
