Now that he's no longer in position to hurt people with his unique blend of indifference, arrogance, and cluelessness, it's easier for me to have some compassion for the man.
He's clearly a very damaged individual.

Your construction is CLASSIC. It's the perfect way to describe that moment, in that context, with that particular individual. Pretty sad.
